Welcome to Merit Pupil Referral Service

Changing school even for a short while is one of the biggest decisions you as a parent or carer will need to make. Merit is a specialist provision for students with medical or mental health needs.

Merit is a happy, inclusive and vibrant place. Our aim is to make learning accessible and enjoyable and we are committed to this. We respect each other and we are tolerant of each other. We share a thirst for learning and we are not complacent.

We look at learning for the whole child which includes wellbeing and mental health as well as achieving success academically.

We would encourage you to come and visit. Indeed a visit is a vital part of the admission process as it is important that you understand the environment you are going to be coming into. However if you would simply like to have a look around call us at any time to arrange a tour on a normal working day.

During any tour of the school you will be able to meet the students who are the real ambassadors of Merit and they will tell you honestly what it is like to be part of this school.

If you are seeking a place at Merit then please contact your mainstream school first and discuss with them the admission criteria and process. You will also need to discuss a possible change of educational provision with your medical consultant or Camhs practitioner.

Merit has consistently achieved examination success. We have year on year improvement at GCSE due to outstanding teaching, precise tracking and intervention for individual students. We pride ourselves on the personalised learning programme for each of our students which ensures they achieve or exceed their targets.

We do not simply focus on examination success. One of the key factors we see in all of our surveys is that students feel safe at Merit and enjoy coming here. They have opportunities to succeed and progress and to shine in many different ways. We have a very vocal student council and all students are able to participate in many and varied activities and trips.

We celebrate students’ reintegration back into mainstream schooling or into college or FE provision. This is fully supported by staff from Merit and while many students do not wish to leave us, they do recognise that they have outgrown Merit provision. They see that they are able to succeed in a larger environment and take advantage of the greater opportunities available to them there.
